Sri Lankan rupee (LKR)

Currency

The Sri Lankan rupee (ISO code: LKR, symbol: ₨) is the official currency of Sri Lanka, issued and managed by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. Subdivided into 100 cents, it was established as a distinct legal tender in 1872, replacing the British pound, Indian rupee, and local paper money. Initially tied to the Indian rupee at par, the currency eventually floated and now fluctuates based on macroeconomic conditions and foreign reserve policy.
