Eritrean nakfa (ERN)

Currency

The Eritrean nakfa, designated by the code ERN, is the official currency of the State of Eritrea. Introduced in November 1997 to replace the Ethiopian birr following national independence, it was named after the town of Nakfa, a key site during the Eritrean War of Independence. Issued by the Bank of Eritrea, the nakfa is divided into 100 cents and operates under a fixed exchange rate pegged to the United States dollar.
