Ghanaian cedi (GHS)

Currency

The Ghanaian cedi, designated by the code GHS and symbol ₵, is the official legal tender of Ghana. Introduced in 1965 to replace the Ghanaian pound, its name stems from the Akan word for cowrie shell, a historic form of currency. The current cedi was introduced in 2007 following a redenomination by the Bank of Ghana that knocked off four zeros, and it is subdivided into 100 pesewas.
