Georgian lari (GEL)

Currency

The Georgian lari, designated by the ISO code GEL and symbol ₾, is the official currency of Georgia. Introduced in October 1995 by the National Bank of Georgia to replace the transitional coupon lari following post-Soviet hyperinflation, its name derives from an Old Georgian word meaning property or treasure. The lari is subdivided into 100 tetri and operates under a floating exchange rate system.
