Malaysian ringgit (MYR)

Currency

The Malaysian ringgit (ISO code: MYR, symbol: RM) is the official legal tender of Malaysia, issued by Bank Negara Malaysia. Introduced in 1967 to replace the Malaya and British Borneo dollar, the currency officially adopted the name "ringgit"—an indigenous Malay word referring to the serrated edges of historical Spanish dollars—in 1975. Subdivided into 100 sen, the currency shifted from a US dollar peg adopted during the 1997 Asian financial crisis back to a managed float in 2005.
