Egyptian pound (EGP)

Currency

The Egyptian pound (EGP, symbol £ or LE) is the official currency of Egypt, issued by the Central Bank of Egypt. Established by parliamentary decree in 1834, it replaced the piastre as the main unit of currency, with one pound equal to 100 piastres or 1,000 milliemes. Egypt adopted a gold standard for the pound in 1885, but the currency was later pegged to the British pound and eventually transitioned to a managed floating exchange rate system.
