Papua New Guinean kina (PGK)

Currency

The Papua New Guinean kina (symbol: K, code: PGK) is the official currency of Papua New Guinea, subdivided into 100 toea. Administered by the Bank of Papua New Guinea, the kina was introduced on April 19, 1975, replacing the Australian dollar at par upon national independence. The terms kina and toea derive from traditional coastal trading currencies made from valuable pearl and cowrie shells historically used throughout the region.
