Ethiopian birr (ETB)

Currency

The Ethiopian birr, identified by the ISO code ETB, is the official legal tender of Ethiopia. Dating back to the 19th-century silver thaler system, the birr became the formal currency name in 1976, replacing the imperial Ethiopian dollar. Issued by the National Bank of Ethiopia and subdivided into 100 santim, the birr serves as one of East Africa's oldest surviving independent monetary units.
