Malawian kwacha (MWK)

Currency

The Malawian kwacha (symbol: MK, code: MWK) is the official national currency of Malawi, subdivided into 100 tambala. Issued by the Reserve Bank of Malawi, the kwacha was introduced in 1971 to replace the Malawian pound at a rate of two kwacha to one pound. The word kwacha translates to 'it has dawned' in the Nyanja language, symbolizing political independence, while tambala translates to 'rooster' in reference to the bird on the first coins.
