Indian rupee (INR)

Currency

The Indian rupee (INR, symbol ₹) is the official currency of India, issued by the Reserve Bank of India. The word rupee derives from the Sanskrit term 'rupya', meaning wrought silver, dating back to silver coinage issued under Sultan Sher Shah Suri in the 16th century. Decimalized in 1957 into 100 paise, the modern Indian rupee is a major Asian currency, represented globally by its distinct currency symbol adopted officially in 2010.
