British pound (GBP)

The British pound sterling (GBP, symbol £) is the official currency of the United Kingdom and its crown dependencies, issued by the Bank of England. Originating in Anglo-Saxon times as equivalent to a pound weight of silver, it is the world's oldest currency continuously in use. The pound was decimalized in 1971, replacing the traditional system of shillings and pence with a simplified division of 100 new pence per pound sterling.
