The rood (symbol: ro) is a historical English unit of land area equal to one-quarter of an acre, or 40 square rods (10,890 square feet, approximately 1,011.7 square metres). The term derives from the Old English word for pole or cross. Historically utilized across Britain and the Commonwealth in agricultural boundary surveys, the rood fell out of official administrative use during the metrication transitions of the late 20th century.
