A homestead is a historical American unit of land area equal to 160 acres (one quarter-section of a survey township), or approximately 64.75 hectares. Established by the United States Homestead Act of 1862 under President Abraham Lincoln, it represented the standard plot of public land granted to applicants for agricultural settlement. This unit defined the rural geography and land distribution patterns across the American West.
