Mile (mi)
The mile (symbol mi) is an imperial and US customary unit of length equal to 5,280 feet, 1,760 yards, or exactly 1.609344 kilometres. Descended from the Roman 'mille passus' (one thousand double paces), the English statute mile was fixed by Parliament under Queen Elizabeth I in 1593. It remains the primary unit for road distances, speed limits, and geographical mapping in the United States, United Kingdom, and several territories.
