Fathom
The fathom (symbol ftm) is a traditional unit of length equal to 6 feet, 2 yards, or exactly 1.8288 metres. Historically derived from the span of a man's outstretched arms, it became the standard unit for measuring water depth and marine rope in maritime navigation. While modern nautical charts predominantly use metres, the fathom remains a recognized unit in maritime history and traditional depth soundings.
