The link (symbol lk) is a traditional unit of length equal to 1/100 of a Gunter's chain, which translates to exactly 7.92 inches or 20.1168 centimetres. Devised by Edmund Gunter in 1620, physical surveying chains were constructed from 100 actual iron links connected by rings. This design allowed land surveyors to record distances decimalized relative to chains and acres, simplifying property boundary measurements.
