Astronomical unit (au)
The astronomical unit (symbol au or AE) is a unit of length roughly equal to the average distance from the Earth to the Sun. Officially defined by the International Astronomical Union in 2012 as exactly 149,597,870,700 metres, it provides a convenient scale for measuring distances within the Solar System. It replaced earlier definitions based on Gaussian gravitational constants and planetary orbits.
