Beats per minute (symbol: BPM) is a unit of tempo and frequency measuring the occurrence of repetitive events per minute. Historically developed in music following the early 19th-century invention of the mechanical metronome by Johann Maelzel, BPM quantifies musical tempo. It is also standard in medicine and cardiology to express human heart rate, where a normal resting adult pulse typically ranges between 60 and 100 beats per minute.
