Bishkek (Russian and Kyrgyz: Бишкек) is the capital and the largest city of Kyrgyzstan (population of approximately 900,000 (2005)). Founded in 1878 as the Russian fortress of Pishpek (Пишпек), between 1926 and 1991 it was known as Frunze (Фрунзе), after the Bolshevik military leader Mikhail Frunze. Read more ![]()
